China. 2025. 27 min

When an estranged father falls ill his son returns home with his own daughter revealing a lifetime of shame and a fathers desperate plea for belonging Through rediscovered diaries riverbank rituals and a lone tree three generations find that roots arent forged in names on pages but in the quiet soil of forgiveness and home.

A junior at Dalian Art College, who first won the Best Editing award at the 26th Golden Rooster Awards in 2024, has now stepped into directing. After gaining experience through multiple semester projects, he made the decisive choice to sell his camera and other assets to fund his debut film Ever-Rooted, which he filmed in 2025.

This film through granddaughter Jinxis dv lens and youthful perspective enters a twilight heavy and secret laden family world. Her return like a beam of modern light illuminates the father son relationship, sealed off by old rules and estrangement. What she documents is not only the final days of her grandfathers life but also how the invisible wall between two generations loosens and crumbles under the catalysis of death truth and kinship. Through daily frictions the directness of the new generation clashes with the silence and shackles of old traditions pushing the parental generation to seek personal redemption and reconciliation in the ultimate questioning of roots and home. The film ultimately explores how love in the honesty of confronting death penetrates misunderstandings dissolves barriers and allows the family tree to regain vitality in a new spring.
