MARKUS TOIVO
Filmmaker from Finland who has studied cinema in Helsinki and Tallinn, and recently graduated from ECAM in Madrid, majoring in film direction. He works both in documentaries and fiction. In his opinion, often one inspires the other. Markus is interested in telling intimate stories that explore the struggle and coexistence of beauty and ugliness. The documentary Wanha Markku (Under Construction) is Markus’ first feature length film.

Holding the camera figuratively in the palm of his hand, David performs directly for whoever might be out there in the future looking at him, to what is for him his final audience. He talks about what it is to stare down death, and what it was to live a life such as he did, a dizzying mix of traditional Aboriginal ways and modern Hollywood excess, and everything in between. It is pure, unmediated and unvarnished David Gulpilil, finally able to say in a film exactly what he wants to say.

The filmmakers also explore the romantic image of Mumbai and how they view it in relation to the one Hindi Cinema curates for us.

The movie opens up with an accidental death of a 30 years old youth. At the autopsy, investigators find his identity card which belongs to ‘Revatha the Buddhist monk’. It stirs the hornet’s nest in the neighborhood where Revatha used to live, as at the time of his death, he had disrobed. Therefore, parishioners of his temple object to bringing his body to the temple and holding a monk’s funeral.
Then the movie begins to reveal the backstory till his death.
