Hassan Fazili, Jury at Imagineindia 2026

Hassan Fazili is an award-winning Afghan filmmaker who has developed theater plays, documentaries, short films, and several popular television series in Afghanistan and abroad.

He began his professional career as an actor under the guidance of “Ustad Abdul Qayum Besed”, widely regarded as the “Father of Afghanistan Theater.” Fazili has acted in numerous stage plays, films, and television series, earning recognition and awards for his performances.

Hassan has also taught in several filmmaking programs and workshops.
At the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, he premiered his acclaimed feature documentary “Midnight Traveler”, which won a Special Jury Award. The film has screened at over 100 festivals worldwide — including the Emmy, Berlinale, Sheffield, HotDocs, IDFA, and Yamagata — and has received more than 30 international awards.

His earlier films Mr. Fazili’s Wife and Life Again! explore women’s rights, children’s rights, and disability issues in Afghanistan, and have screened at and won awards at numerous international festivals. Fazili’s documentary Peace in Afghanistan profiles Taliban commander “Mullah Tur Jan”, who laid down his arms to pursue a peaceful civilian life.

Hassan Fazili now lives in Los Angeles, where he continues writing screenplays and teaching filmmaking workshops for refugee and immigrant communities.
