DIRECTOR´S NOTE
The path of Russian cinema, its destiny, and its foundation lies in intellectual cinema. The kind that makes you think, analyze, and rethink different situations. Not in terms of genre or, God forbid, the hackneyed pseudo-elitism. I’m talking about serious, profound drama; above all, which is a compelling story and for cinema, it is a pictorial storytelling medium. It can be a comedy, melodrama, detective story – it doesn’t matter. The main thing is that it will inevitably raise acute questions without clear, simple answers, offering the viewer a chance to reflect on them. This thoughtful, serious dialogue with the viewer can be called the art of cinema. Such films have many intuitive elements, ruled by emotional intelligence, without the author-killing marketing drivel about stupid viewers. The creation of such a film involves an entire team of creative individuals, true masters. My film “The Wanderer” is, first and foremost, about love. About a woman’s love, that tremendous overarching love on which the world rests. Mother, wife, sister, daughter, grandmother – the hypostases of a woman’s love for which there is no definition or understanding; this cosmic force defies analysis. And it is this love, above all, that comes under attack. It is first tormented by the terrible, tragic events that have permeated human history to this day. If this feeling were made the primary measure of our lives, if husbands, sons, brothers, and grandsons, taking up arms, would turn back and see the eyes of the women watching them leave, I am sure everything would be different.
